There aren’t any statuettes, but Bad Marie is in wonderful company as one of the recipients of the 2010 Nobbie Award for the Best Books of the Year: Dermansky’s slim, subversive novel—concerning a wayward, drunken, selfish, and sexy nanny who abducts her charge (and her charge’s French father!) and absconds to Paris for a hedonistic food-and-sex fest before reality hits—is generally described as “naughty,” “evil,” or “wicked,” usually modified by the adverb “deliciously.” Marie may not be the kind of girl you take home to mother, but she’d sure be fun to bring to France for a long weekend.
